Fundamental theories and some related methods of mathematical physics have always been the important parts of physics, which play an essential role in guiding and promoting the development of physics and even natural science. The recent progresses in quantum field theory and quantum gravity, have changed some of our general comprehension, especially highlighting the importance of basic theoretical research. To solve some of the fundamental problems in physics, such as dark matter, dark energy and quantum gravity, we must first have a profound theoretical foundation and a deep understanding of the relevant issues.

After years of efforts, China has made certain accumulation and considerable progress in the fundamental theories of high energy physics and relevant fields. But at the same time we must clearly recognize that the original achievements with international influence are quite insufficient. If we want to place in the international field of high energy physics, it is necessary for us to cultivate and build a high-level team as soon as possible, creating a good atmosphere that respect and prioritize the academic research, so that people can carry out the original research on relevant issues with great concentration.

The establishment of "Peng Huanwu Center for Fundamental Theory" (PCFT) is an important concrete measure to achieve the above goals. The 7th scientific committee for the special fund of National Science Foundation of China decided in 2019 that the University of Science and Technology of China along with the Northwest University considered to build jointly the PCFT in High Energy Physics. The center will mainly carry out academic research and exchange on fundamental theories including field theory, string theory and related mathematical physics, in order to promote the China's overall academic level in the related fields.

With the establishment and development of the center and the joint efforts of academic colleagues, we would like to provide a decent and academically-oriented environment for the relevant scientific community, encouraging members, especially young people in research and their enjoyment. With such accumulated efforts, we hope that some of us can make certain breakthroughs in key problems and have original and significant contributions.
