Abstract: Complex Kähler varieties with vanishing first Chern class, Calabi-Yau varieties for short, can be viewed as natural generalisation of elliptic curves from one -- to higher complexdimensions. Here we highlight the most interesting mathematical aspects of thesegeneralisations with a particular emphasis on their applications to mathematical physics, which range from geometric engineering of non-perturbative quantum field theoriesover the predictions for the microscopic entropy of black holes to the calculation of Feynman integrals.
